A diamond set shoulder runs a line of smaller stones along each side of the band, leading the eye towards the centre. The shoulders carry light into the heart of the ring and make the principal diamond read larger and brighter. We design every example in CAD and hand-finish it at our own bench in our London workshop, with casting and setting carried out by trusted specialist workshops.
How the shoulders frame the centre
The shoulders are the two sloping sections of the band that meet the head of the ring. Setting them with diamonds creates a tapering avenue of light that draws attention inward, so the centre stone sits at the end of a deliberate line rather than alone on a plain band.
Proportion matters. We size and grade the shoulder stones to flatter the centre rather than compete with it, and we taper them so the band narrows gracefully towards the finger. GIA or IGI certification is available on centre stones, whether you choose natural diamonds or laboratory-grown diamonds.
Channel, pavé and grain settings
The character of a diamond set shoulder comes from how the stones are held. Each method has its own line, its own play of light and its own practical merits, and we will talk you through them at the bench.

Channel setting: stones sit in a recessed track between two walls of metal, giving a clean, protected line that suits an active life.

Pavé setting: closely placed stones held by tiny beads, so the surface reads as near-continuous brilliance with little visible metal.

Grain setting: individual diamonds secured by raised beads of metal worked up by hand, a traditional finish with crisp definition.
Pairing with solitaire and halo centres
Diamond shoulders work with almost any centre. Against a solitaire, they add quiet movement to a single stone without changing its classic outline. Against a halo, they extend the frame of pavé already surrounding the centre, so brilliance carries from the head right down the band.
The same approach reads well alongside a three-stone design or a cluster, and the metal choice shapes the mood. We work in platinum and 18ct golds, and a setting can be matched later to a wedding ring so the pair sit flush.

Will the shoulder stones loosen over time?
Well-made settings hold their stones securely for years. Channel and grain work give particularly good protection. A periodic check at the bench keeps any setting in good order over a lifetime of wear. Aftercare is chargeable and quoted first.
Can I use lab-grown diamonds in the shoulders?
Yes. We offer both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds, with GIA or IGI certification available on the centre stone, and you can mix the centre and shoulders to suit your budget and preference. Many clients pair a natural centre with laboratory-grown shoulders, or choose one type throughout.
