What does diamond colour mean?

Diamond colour in the D-Z grading scale measures the absence of colour in a white diamond. D is perfectly colourless (the rarest and most expensive); Z shows strong yellow or brown tint. The scale assesses body colour only, not the diamond's rainbow-fire dispersion, which comes from cut quality. Fancy-coloured diamonds (pink, blue, yellow, green) are graded on a separate Fancy scale.

What colour grade should I choose for an engagement ring?

For white gold or platinum settings we recommend G to I colour - near-colourless and visually indistinguishable from higher grades once set. For yellow or rose gold settings, warmth from the metal masks slight colour, so J or K can look beautiful and offer significant value. Avoid going below K for centre stones over 1.00 carat.

What is the difference between D, E, and F colour?

D, E, and F are all classified as colourless. D has zero detectable colour under controlled grading lighting. E and F show trace amounts visible only to a trained grader under magnification. In a finished ring, even gemologists cannot tell them apart face-up. The price difference between D and F can be 15 to 25 percent - E or F offers near-identical appearance at lower cost.

Can I see colour difference with my eyes?

Colour grades D through H appear colourless to untrained eyes when viewed face-up in a ring. Slight warmth becomes visible from I onwards against a pure white background, but rarely in normal lighting. Colour is easier to detect in larger diamonds (2.00ct+) and in step-cut shapes like emerald or Asscher where the open table shows body tone clearly.

What are fancy-coloured diamonds?

Fancy-coloured diamonds display hues beyond the D-Z range - pink, blue, yellow, green, orange, red, and rare violet. Colour is caused by trace elements (nitrogen for yellow, boron for blue) or structural anomalies during formation. Fancy colours are graded on intensity - Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, Fancy Deep - with Vivid and Deep commanding the highest prices.

When looking at a diamonds colour grade, we are referring to its lack of colour. In other words we are looking at the whiteness of the diamond, the less colour a diamond has, the higher its grade.

We choose to stock diamonds from D to I on the colour grading scale, as these stones are which meet our quality guidelines.

Choosing the Right Colour
The best diamond colour ultimately depends on personal preference, budget, and design. Many clients find that near colourless diamonds (G–J) offer the perfect balance between beauty and value, while others prefer the crisp purity of D–F stones.
The setting also plays an important role—white metals such as platinum or white gold tend to highlight colourlessness, while yellow or rose gold can complement warmer tones beautifully.
Understanding the D to Z scale allows you to choose a diamond that not only looks exceptional but also suits your style and priorities.

The highest quality in terms of colour grading is completely colourless, which is rated as a "D" colour diamond worldwide, indicating that it is devoid of all colour. Expert diamond value/grading laboratories can discover a very little trace of colour in the following grade.
Nevertheless, these extremely light-colored diamonds do not display any colour or it is impossible to distinguish colour tones when they are set in jewellery. These diamonds have an E or F colour rating.
G or H colour diamonds are classified as having very low colour traces. Diamonds with slight hue variations are rated as I, J, or K. A diamond is not just colourless; it may be found in any colour.
Certain coloured diamonds, like the pink kind, are quite uncommon. A diamond that is structurally flawless and chemically pure is completely transparent, lacking any colour.
