The 4Cs of Diamonds

The 4Cs are the four properties used to grade every diamond: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. Together they explain almost all of the price difference between any two stones, and every GIA or IGI certificate reports them in the same standard language. Knowing what each one does, and where it stops mattering to the eye, is how you buy well rather than simply buy big.

Cut

Cut describes how a diamond's facets are proportioned, and it governs brilliance more than any other factor. A well-cut stone returns light through the table and sparkles; a poorly cut one of the same colour and clarity can look flat and lifeless. On a round brilliant the top grades are Excellent and Ideal, and the difference in light return is visible across a room, not just under a loupe. Because cut is the C the eye reads first, it is the one we are least willing to compromise on. Read our full guide to diamond cut.

Colour

Colour is graded on a scale from D, completely colourless, down to Z, a warm yellow or brown tint. D to F are colourless and command the highest prices. G to J are near-colourless and, set in white metal, look bright to the unaided eye while costing considerably less, which is why this band offers the best value for most engagement rings. From K onwards the warmth becomes visible, though it can sit beautifully in yellow or rose gold. More on the scale, and how setting metal changes the result, on our diamond colour page.

Clarity

Clarity measures the natural inclusions and surface marks formed as the diamond grew, graded from FL, flawless, through VVS and VS to SI and the included grades. For engagement rings, VS1 and VS2 are the sweet spot: inclusions at this level are not visible to the naked eye, so you pay for what you can see rather than for perfection under magnification. We source certified stones to your brief and share full grading and detail so you can see where an inclusion sits and whether it matters. See the full breakdown on our diamond clarity page.

Carat weight

Carat is the weight of the stone, where one carat equals 0.2 grams. Price does not rise in a straight line: a single one-carat diamond costs more than two half-carat diamonds of equal grade, because larger rough is rarer. Weights also cluster at round milestones such as 1.00ct and 2.00ct, so a stone just under a landmark can offer a real saving for a difference no eye can detect. We explain how to read weight against spread and millimetre size on our diamond carat weight page.

How the 4Cs trade off against budget

No diamond is best on all four measures within a sensible budget, so buying well is a matter of deciding where to spend and where to ease off. In practice we hold cut high, treat G to J colour and VS clarity as the value band, and let carat weight flex to suit the figure you have in mind. At your consultation we shortlist stones against that logic, sourced to your brief, and share full grading and detail so you can see exactly what each compromise looks like before you commit. Settings start from £800 and complete bespoke engagement rings from £1,500, with most commissions falling between £3,000 and £12,000.

Certification, the fifth C

A grade only means something when an independent laboratory has confirmed it. GIA or IGI certification is available on every centre stone we supply, documenting cut, colour, clarity and carat weight so you can compare like with like and know precisely what you own. Every finished piece is also hallmarked at the London Assay Office, included in the price. We work in both natural and lab-grown diamonds, and the certificate states clearly which you are buying.

Which of the 4Cs matters most?

Cut, because it controls how much a diamond sparkles. A high cut grade makes a stone look lively regardless of small differences elsewhere, so we protect it first and adjust colour, clarity and carat around it.

What is the best value combination for an engagement ring?

For most clients, an Excellent or Ideal cut paired with G to J colour and VS1 to VS2 clarity gives a stone that looks flawless to the eye while leaving the most budget for size. We tailor that starting point to your preferences at consultation.

Are lab-grown diamonds graded on the same 4Cs?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are graded by GIA or IGI on exactly the same scales as natural stones, and the certificate identifies the stone as laboratory-grown. They typically cost less per carat, which lets the same budget reach a larger or higher-graded stone.

Do I need a certificate for a smaller diamond?

For any centre stone we recommend it, as the certificate is your independent record of quality and a help should you ever insure or resell. Very small accent stones are usually supplied to a stated specification rather than individually certified.

With three generations in the trade and our founder in Hatton Garden since 1999, we design in CAD and hand-finish every commission at our own bench at The Goldsmiths' Centre, with casting and setting carried out by trusted specialist workshops, and reply within four working hours, Monday to Friday. To put the 4Cs to work on a specific stone, start with a diamond or book a free, no-obligation consultation.

Cut is what brings a diamond to life. Choose it first, and let the others follow.

At our Hatton Garden bench
What are the 4Cs of diamonds?

Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat weight. These four characteristics determine a diamond's quality and value. We use GIA-certified diamonds graded to international standards.

What is the difference between lab grown and natural diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to natural diamonds. The only difference is origin. Lab grown are typically 50-70% less expensive than equivalent natural diamonds.

Do you sell GIA certified diamonds?

Yes, GIA or IGI certification is available on every centre-stone diamond. Smaller accent stones under 0.25ct aren't typically certified. Every certificate can be verified online.
