Laser Engraving

Laser engraving marks dates, names, handwriting and other details on fine jewellery with a precision hand tools cannot reach. Carried out in the Hatton Garden workshop, the beam cuts cleanly into platinum, gold and most precious metals, so even very small lettering stays sharp and legible.

What can be laser-engraved

The laser works from a digital file, so it can reproduce almost any line, character or image you supply. Common requests include:

  • Dates and names, set inside or outside the band.
  • A line of handwriting, reproduced exactly from a scan of the original.
  • A fingerprint, captured and engraved as a fine, faithful pattern.
  • Map coordinates marking a place that matters to you.
  • Symbols, initials, infinity marks and other small motifs.

Engraving can sit on the inside of a ring, where it stays private, or on the outer surface where it becomes part of the design.

Why laser engraving

The beam is extremely fine, so it holds small lettering and intricate artwork without losing definition. It performs well across platinum, gold and most precious metals, and because nothing presses against the piece, the work can usually be carried out without removing stones.

Rings and other pieces that were not bought from us are welcome. Bring the item to the studio and the metal and surface are checked for laser work before any marking begins.

Do stones need to be removed first?

Usually not. Because the laser does not press against the piece, most engraving is completed with the stones in place.

How small can the lettering be?

Very small. The laser reproduces fine type and detailed artwork cleanly, which is why it is the preferred method for delicate inscriptions.

Common questions

How much does laser engraving cost?

Laser engraving at Hatton Garden Bespoke Jewellery starts from £30 for a short inscription. Engraving is complimentary on most bespoke commissions placed with us. Complex multi-line designs, fingerprints, or handwritten signatures are priced individually at consultation.

How long does laser engraving take?

Laser engraving typically takes one to three working days once the artwork is approved. We send a digital proof for approval before any cut is made, so the finished inscription arrives exactly as you visualised.

Which metals can you laser engrave?

We laser engrave platinum, 18ct and 9ct gold (all colours), silver, palladium, titanium, and most contemporary jewellery metals. Laser depth is adjustable, so fine bands and delicate pieces are not deformed in the process. Soft stones are protected during engraving.

Can I laser engrave a handwritten signature or fingerprint?

Yes. Send us a photograph of the handwritten phrase, signature, or fingerprint and we will digitise and laser engrave it faithfully onto your piece. This is one of our most-requested personalisations for wedding bands and memorial jewellery.

Can laser engraving be removed or changed later?

Light laser engravings can usually be polished out and the piece re-engraved, as long as the band is not already at its thinnest dimension. Deep decorative laser work may be permanent. We advise you at consultation which is appropriate for your piece.

Do you laser engrave jewellery not made by you?

Yes. Bring your piece to our Hatton Garden studio or post it insured. We will inspect the metal, recommend placement, and provide a fixed-price quote before work begins. Most external pieces are turned around within five working days.
