Our engravers use hardened steel gravers to cut directly into metal, creating a distinctive, softly shimmering line that no machine can replicate. Every stroke catches light slightly differently; the entire surface reads as hand-made, unique, and alive with character. Our engravers train for years before they are allowed to cut a final piece. The technique requires exceptional hand-eye coordination, an intuitive understanding of metal behaviour under pressure, and a classical training in calligraphy and heraldic conventions. Many of our clients choose hand engraving specifically because the result cannot be reproduced - each piece is a one-off, signed by the engraver's hand in every line.
Metals · hand engraving works beautifully on 18ct gold (yellow, white, rose), 22ct gold, platinum, silver, and rhodium-plated surfaces. Softer metals cut more easily and receive deeper, more expressive lines; harder alloys hold crisper edges over decades of wear.
Process and pricing · hand engraving starts from £85 for simple initials or date work. Seal engraving, full monograms, and heraldic work are priced individually at consultation based on complexity and the engraver's time - typical range £150 to £600 per piece. Turnaround is five to ten working days from design sign-off. A pencil transfer is laid directly on your piece for approval before any cut is made.
