In a laboratory setting, lab-grown diamonds are formed through a process that emulates the natural growth of diamonds. Although they possess the same visual, chemical, and physical properties as natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds can be up to 85% less expensive and are considered a more eco-friendly choice compared to mined diamonds.
Since both naturally occurring and lab-grown diamonds share the same chemical makeup, they are both regarded as "real" diamonds. Therefore, even though earth-made and lab-grown diamonds are both true diamonds composed of densely packed carbon atoms, many people believe that natural diamonds are the only "real" kind of diamonds. Due to their similar visual and chemical characteristics, they are both excellent gemstones that go well with any type of jewellery.
Lab-grown diamonds are created using processes that replicate the natural conditions under which diamonds form. Methods such as High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) allow carbon atoms to bond and grow into a diamond crystal over time. The result is a genuine diamond with the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as one mined from the Earth.
This means lab-grown diamonds are not imitations or substitutes. They are not the same as cubic zirconia or moissanite. They are real diamonds-tested and graded using the same standards as natural stones, including cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.
The only difference lies in origin. Natural diamonds take billions of years to form beneath the Earth’s surface, while lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments over a matter of weeks. Visually and structurally, however, they are indistinguishable without specialised equipment.
For many, lab-grown diamonds offer a modern approach to fine jewellery-combining traditional beauty with contemporary innovation. They allow for exceptional quality and larger stones, while maintaining the same brilliance, durability, and timeless appeal expected from a real diamond.
