A bespoke ring is built from three costs, and you control all of them at the design stage.

1. The centre stone

Carat weight steps up sharply at round numbers, so a 0.90ct stone can cost noticeably less than a 1.00ct of the same grade while looking a fraction of a millimetre different.

What we can tell you is where the value sits. Hold cut high, because it governs how much a stone sparkles. Treat G to J colour and VS clarity as the value band, since neither is visible to the naked eye once set. Then let carat flex to suit the figure you have in mind. Lab grown diamonds typically cost less per carat than natural, so the same budget reaches a larger or higher graded stone.

2. The setting

Our settings run from £910 to a little over £8,000, and the spread comes down to metal and complexity.

A plain solitaire sits at the lower end. Platinum costs more than gold because it is denser and harder to work, so more metal and more bench time go into the same design. Detail adds cost in proportion to the hand work it needs: a halo or a pavé band means dozens of small stones individually set, and a three stone design carries two additional stones as well as the centre.

Because our settings are priced individually and shown with the stone, you can see the effect of each choice as you make it rather than waiting for a quote.

3. The design work

A design fee of £350 covers the CAD work, and it comes off the price of the ring when you go ahead. It is not an additional charge on top of the finished piece.

The reason it exists is straightforward. CAD design is real work done before anything is committed, and charging for it means we can spend proper time on the drawing rather than rushing to a sale. Every ring is designed in CAD and hand finished at our bench inside The Goldsmiths' Centre, then hallmarked at the London Assay Office, which is included in the price rather than added at the end.

What you get at each level

£2,000 to £3,000

A classic solitaire in gold with a smaller natural stone, or a larger lab grown one. This is the range for a simple, restrained ring. You are choosing proportion over carat weight, and a well cut half carat in a clean setting reads better on the hand than a bigger stone in a compromised one.

£3,000 to £12,000

Most of what we make. Expect a centre stone around three quarters of a carat upwards in natural, or larger in lab grown, in platinum or 18ct gold, with a solitaire, halo or three stone setting. There is room here for detail: pavé shoulders, a hidden halo, tapered baguettes.

Above £12,000

Larger natural stones with premium colour and clarity, or elaborate hand set work. This bracket also covers redesigns built around a significant inherited stone, where the architecture is new but the diamond has a history.

How long it takes

Three to four weeks from the moment you approve the CAD design. Allow four to six weeks end to end from the first conversation, which leaves room for choosing the stone and revising the drawing.

Why a Hatton Garden workshop is often less than the high street

The work is no cheaper; the chain is shorter.
