The marquise cut diamond has a heritage as distinguished as its appearance. Legend holds that the cut was commissioned by King Louis XV of France, who requested a diamond shaped to mirror the perfect lips of his beloved Marquise de Pompadour. Whether or not the story is entirely true, the result is a shape of undeniable drama and aristocratic elegance.
The marquise · sometimes called the navette or "little boat" · is characterised by its elongated body and two pointed ends. This shape maximises the visual size of a diamond relative to its carat weight more effectively than almost any other cut, making it an outstanding choice for clients who want a stone that commands attention. A well-proportioned marquise can appear significantly larger face-up than a round brilliant of the same weight.
With 58 brilliant-style facets, marquise diamonds offer lively sparkle and fire. As with other elongated cuts, a bow-tie effect can be present; expert selection is essential to minimise this. We recommend a length-to-width ratio of between 1.75 and 2.25 for the most elegant proportions. Symmetry is paramount · particularly the alignment of the two pointed tips, which should form a perfectly straight axis.
Marquise diamonds suit solitaire settings that protect the pointed ends with V-shaped prongs, as well as three-stone configurations where the flanking stones complement the central marquise beautifully.
