How to Propose When You Do Not Know Their Ring Size

by Hatton Garden Bespoke Jewellery 2 min read

You want the proposal to be a surprise, which usually means you cannot simply ask for a ring size. It is one of the most common worries we hear, and it is rarely a problem. Here is how to handle it.

The quiet ways to find their size

  • Borrow a ring. The simplest method. Take a ring they already wear on the relevant finger and either bring it to us or measure its inside diameter. Even a clear tracing helps.
  • Ask someone close. A sibling, parent or best friend can often find out without raising suspicion.
  • Draw round a ring. Press one of their rings into a bar of soap, or trace it on paper, and we can work from that.

Our ring sizing guide covers each of these in more detail.

If you truly cannot find out

Propose with the ring you have, and have it resized afterwards. This is completely normal. We size most rings down at no charge, and sizing up is usually a small cost depending on the design. The proposal still happens with a real ring in a box; the fit is sorted later.

If you would rather not guess at all, propose with intent and then design the real ring together. Many couples enjoy choosing the final piece as a pair, and a bespoke commission is the natural way to do that.

Getting it close

UK sizes run by letter, and most women's engagement rings fall between K and P. If you are estimating, the middle of that range is a sensible guess for an average hand. We would always rather resize a finished ring than have you lose sleep over a single letter.

However you approach it, we can help. Tell us your situation and we will guide you through it.
