Three generations of jewellers

The metal you choose shapes how a ring looks, how it wears, and what it costs. For engagement rings, the real decision is usually between platinum, white gold and yellow gold. Each has its place. Here is how they compare.
Platinum is naturally white, dense and hard-wearing, and it holds a diamond securely, which is why it is the traditional choice for fine engagement rings. It does not fade or change colour, so it never needs re-plating. Over the years it develops a soft surface patina that many people prefer, and which can be polished back at any time. It is the heaviest and usually the most expensive of the three.
White gold is gold alloyed with white metals and finished with a fine rhodium plating that gives it a bright, cool colour. It looks very similar to platinum at a lower price and sits a little lighter on the hand. The rhodium plating wears over time and benefits from being refreshed every few years to keep it at its whitest. It is a popular, practical choice.
Yellow gold is the classic, warm choice, and it is enjoying a strong revival. It flatters warmer skin tones and suits both vintage and clean modern designs. We work mostly in 18ct, which balances a rich colour with everyday durability. Yellow gold needs no plating, as its colour runs all the way through.
There is no wrong answer, and the right metal often comes down to what the wearer already favours. Every ring we make is offered in platinum, 18ct white, yellow or rose gold. To talk it through, start a conversation with us, or begin designing in our ring studio.
