What are diamond-set shoulders?

Diamond-set shoulders refer to the sides of the ring band where it meets the centre stone - the 'shoulders' of the ring. Instead of plain metal, these sides are set with small accent diamonds (typically 0.01-0.05ct each) via pavé, channel, or claw setting. The result is a continuous flash of sparkle flowing from the band up to the centre stone.

How many diamonds are on the shoulders?

Typical diamond-set shoulders hold 8 to 16 accent diamonds per side, depending on the band width and the size of each accent stone. Total accent diamond weight usually ranges from 0.15ct to 0.50ct on an engagement ring. Full-eternity shoulders extend all the way around the band for a continuous line of diamonds.

Do diamond-set shoulders make the centre stone look larger?

Yes. The continuous sparkle leading up to the centre creates an optical bridge that visually enlarges the stone. A 1.00ct solitaire with diamond-set shoulders can appear 15-20 percent larger than the same stone on a plain band. The effect is even stronger with a hidden halo underneath.

Are diamond-set shoulder rings resizable?

Half-length diamond-set shoulders (typically the front half of the ring) resize without issue - the plain back half accommodates sizing adjustments. Full-length or eternity-style diamond shoulders are much harder to resize because stones cover the entire band. We advise ordering the exact final size for eternity-style commissions.

How much more does a diamond-set shoulder ring cost?

Diamond-set shoulders typically add £400 to £1,500 over an equivalent plain-band solitaire, depending on setting style (channel is cheapest; pavé is most expensive for labour) and total accent diamond weight. A 1.00ct solitaire in platinum at ~£6,000 becomes ~£7,500 with quality pavé diamond shoulders.
