The radiant cut diamond is a relatively modern creation, developed in the 1970s by master cutter Henry Grossbard with the goal of combining the elegant rectangular outline of the emerald cut with the spectacular brilliance of a round brilliant. The result is a diamond that truly earns its name: radiating light from every facet, in a versatile shape that flatters a wide range of hand types and setting styles.
Radiant cut diamonds feature between 62 and 70 facets - more than any other rectangular or square cut - arranged in a complex brilliant pattern. This gives the radiant unparalleled sparkle for a step-cut inspired silhouette, and also means it is one of the most forgiving cuts when it comes to colour: the faceting pattern breaks up colour concentration, making slightly lower colour grades appear whiter than they would in an emerald or Asscher cut.
Available in both square and rectangular proportions, the radiant suits a wide range of aesthetics. A square radiant is bold and modern; a rectangular radiant is more elongating and classic. For those who love the look of an emerald cut but want maximum brilliance, or who admire a princess cut but prefer cut corners for safety and wearability, the radiant is the perfect compromise.
Radiant diamonds work beautifully in solitaire, halo, and three-stone settings. They also pair exceptionally well with tapered baguette side stones, creating a refined vintage-inspired look.
