An emerald carries a depth of green that few stones can match. Choosing one for an engagement ring is as much about care as it is about colour. We design each ring in CAD and hand-finish it at our own bench in London, with casting and setting carried out by trusted specialist workshops, working closely with you so the stone will be worn for a lifetime.
Emerald is green beryl, prized for the saturation and warmth of its colour rather than flawless clarity. Most fine emeralds contain natural inclusions, known by the French word jardin, or garden. These are part of the stone's identity, and a richly coloured emerald with visible jardin is usually preferred to a paler, cleaner one.
On the Mohs scale emerald sits at roughly 7.5 to 8, which sounds robust. In practice its inclusions make it more brittle than ruby or sapphire, so it asks for a little more thought in how it is set and worn.
Because emerald can chip at an exposed edge, we favour settings that shelter the stone. A bezel, which surrounds the girdle with a continuous rim of metal, gives the most protection and suits emerald particularly well. Where you prefer claws, we make them generous and well placed so the corners are guarded.
Almost all emeralds are treated with oil or resin to improve the appearance of their clarity. This is a long-standing and accepted practice across the trade, and we will always tell you what a stone has been treated with. The point worth knowing is practical: oiled emeralds should not be cleaned in ultrasonic baths or with harsh solvents, as these can disturb the treatment.
An emerald rewards gentler wear than a diamond. Remove the ring for gardening, sport, cleaning and anything involving knocks or chemicals. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, nothing more aggressive. Treated well, your ring will hold its colour and presence for years, and we are here to check and re-oil it when needed.
Every ring is drawn and designed in-house and hand-finished at our own bench in The Goldsmiths' Centre near Farringdon, with casting and setting carried out by trusted specialist workshops. We work in platinum and 18ct golds, and can pair an emerald with independently graded natural or laboratory-grown diamonds. Bespoke engagement rings start from £2,000.
We source emeralds to your brief, with certification available, and share the full grading and details of each stone. You can design your emerald ring in our ring studio, book a consultation at our private studio to discuss your design, or read more about our approach to bespoke engagement rings.
Yes, with sensible habits. Emerald is hard but more brittle than sapphire or ruby, so a protective setting and gentler wear matter. Many clients keep an emerald ring for occasions and a plainer band for rougher days, which is something we are happy to plan for together.
No. Oil or resin treatment is standard and disclosed for nearly every emerald on the market. We tell you exactly what your stone has had done. The only real consequence is care: avoid ultrasonic cleaning and harsh chemicals, and the treatment stays sound.
The emerald cut, with its stepped facets and clipped corners, both flatters the colour and removes fragile points. Paired with a bezel or well-protected claws, it gives a calm, architectural ring that guards the stone. We will talk through the options with you in detail.
