The sapphire
Sapphire is the gem-quality form of corundum, the same mineral as ruby. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond in hardness, well suited to a ring worn every day. The classic blues come from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Madagascar, from soft cornflower to deep royal. Sapphire is not only blue: pink, yellow and teal stones are all corundum, as are rarer untreated sapphires prized for their natural colour. Natural and heat-treated, told honestly
Most sapphires are heat-treated, a long-established process that improves colour and clarity. There is nothing wrong with a well-treated stone, and it accounts for the majority set in fine jewellery. What matters is that you know what you are buying. We tell you which stones are heat-treated and which are not, and we can source certified untreated sapphires when that is what you want. With GIA or IGI certification on every centre stone, the disclosure is independent.
Pairing and settings
Metal choice shapes how a sapphire reads. White metals, platinum or white gold, cool and sharpen a blue stone, while yellow gold lends warmth and a more vintage character. Diamond-set shoulders add brightness along the band, and a halo of white diamonds lifts the sapphire’s colour while increasing its apparent size. After a free consultation we prepare CAD renders, then bring the ring to life once you approve them. Settings start from £800 and complete bespoke engagement rings from £1,500, with most commissions between £3,000 and £12,000. Every ring is hallmarked at the London Assay Office, included.
Are sapphires hard enough for everyday wear?
Yes. At Mohs 9 sapphire is among the most durable coloured gemstones, though we recommend a secure setting and occasional checks.
Should I choose a natural or heat-treated sapphire?
Both are legitimate. Heat-treated stones offer strong colour at a better price; certified untreated stones command a premium. We explain the difference and let you decide.
How long does a bespoke sapphire ring take?
Allow about 7 to 10 days from consultation to CAD, then three to four weeks from approval. An express turnaround of two to three weeks is sometimes possible.
